BASIC FUNCTION:
Responsible, primarily, for coaching competitive debate. Coaching will also include individual events. Working in collaboration with the Coach of Interpretive Events, duties will include recruiting and supervision of all aspects of a traveling forensics team and tournament scheduling. The position will include teaching courses in all aspects of Forensics and Argumentation and Debate. Additional speech communication courses may include, but are not limited to, Public Speaking and/or Interpersonal Communication.

EDUCATION:
Master's in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication, or organizational communication OR bachelor's in any of the above AND master's in drama/theater arts, mass communication, or English OR the equivalent. (All degrees and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications shall be from accredited institutions).

EXPERIENCE:
Must possess the ability to recruit and the vision to create, implement, and direct a successful, nationally competitive forensics program and the educational background to teach a variety of speech communication courses. Demonstrated successful experience (a minimum of two years) coaching diverse aspects of forensics activity and teaching speech communication courses at the community college or baccalaureate-level institution is required. Teaching in a web-enhanced, hybrid and/or online environment is a plus.

Competitive Forensics; the scholarship of teaching and learning; pedagogy and philosophy of teaching that focuses on student success while maintaining academic standards; developmental education; and the California community college mission.

ABILITY TO:
Coach well; teach well; create and develop curriculum; work well with others (students, faculty, staff, and
administrators); fulfill the duties as Coach of Debate in collaboration with the Coach of Interpretive Events; and fulfill the duties of a full-time faculty member in a shared governance environment.

Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students (E.C. 87360a).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Primary assignment will be coaching, in cooperation with the Coach of Interpretive Events, RCC's Forensics Program which includes recruiting, tournament scheduling and preparation for both team events and individual events with a focus on debate; participation in a minimum of (8) eight local, regional, state, and national tournaments, including judging responsibilities; and teaching Forensics and Argumentation and Debate classes.
2. The instructional assignment will include additional classes in the discipline.
3. The Debate Coach in Forensics assignment is based on a minimum workload of forty hours weekly which will include weekend duties (tournaments). Late afternoons and evenings may also be required. The forty hours will also include, but is not limited to coaching forensics, recruiting for forensics, conducting classes, class preparation, office hours, and student evaluation.
4. Participation in departmental and speech communication discipline decision-making processes, work regarding curriculum, including identification of student learning outcomes and assessment as well as program development, complying with College and Department policies in the performance of duties, scheduling, and other matters are expected of all faculty members including the Coach of Debate in Forensics.
5. The Debate Coach is required to fulfill committee work through supervising the co-curricular student organization, Phi Rho Pi.
6. The Debate Coach is responsible for establishing and maintaining good working relationships with the Interpretive Events Coach, students, college faculty, staff, administration, the community, and DOFs from other colleges and universities.
7. Other responsibilities include maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the position.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. Ten-month, tenure-track position.
2. Salary is commensurate with academic preparation, and full-time teaching or equivalent experience with a range from Column C, Step 1 to Column H, Step 6 of the current Faculty Salary Schedule.
3. Medical and dental benefits are provided for the employee and legal dependents.
4. A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided for the employee.
5. Orientation to college is required as is adherence to Improvement of Instruction policy.
6. Maintain broad knowledge of academic or occupational area and design pedagogy related to learning outcomes.
7. Responsible for all other conditions of employment required of full-time faculty members such as a willingness to be involved in District promotional activities, active participation in college committee work, student activities and other support services, and appropriate professional activities.
