Handling of Sexual Violence Examined at Hampton U., William and Mary

HAMPTON, Va. — Federal officials are investigating the handling of campus sexual violence at Hampton University and the College of William and Mary.

The Daily Press reports that the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights is investigating under Title IX, which protects against discrimination in educational programs that receive federal funding.

It was not immediately clear why the OCR launched the investigations. The Department of Education has not responded to Freedom of Information Act requests filed by the Daily Press.

The OCR began its investigation at Hampton University in August. It began investigations at William and Mary in April 2014 and August 2017. Both remain open.

A spokesman for William and Mary said the most recent investigation came in response to a complaint a student made in June 2016. Hampton University did not respond to requests for comment.
