College President Upsets Faculty by Opposing Gay Marriage

SALT LAKE CITY — Some professors say they are upset to learn that Utah Valley University President Matthew Holland signed his name to an amicus brief before the U.S. Supreme Court opposing gay marriage.

KUTV reports that some professors at the school say Holland crossed the line by identifying himself as the school’s president in the brief.

UVU professor Jim Harris says it was “a little disturbing” to see Holland’s name on a document that opposes same sex marriage and that argues the practice would lead to 900,000 more abortions over 30 years if legalized.

Dozens of current and former UVU faculty and staff argued in a letter published Friday in The Salt Lake Tribune that Holland’s decision goes against the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
