NEEDED: OTHER FORMS OF EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION

 One thing that concerns me about this and other articles (see “Emergency Notification in an Instant,” March 6) about emergency notification efforts is the emphasis that is placed on sending messages to student cell phones. We are a nonresidential college, so our students are pretty much only on campus when they are in class. Most instructors require students to turn off their cell phones when they are in class, so efforts focused on notification via cell phone would be misguided in the case of a college like ours. For any college, however, the students most at risk are probably those sitting in classrooms, hopefully with their cell phones turned off. Therefore, we need to get beyond the focus on getting students to have cell phones and getting them to sign up for emergency cell phone notification and find other ways to notify students in and out of class when there is a dangerous situation on campus
