Macy's, Bloomingdale's Partner With UNCF To Increase Minority Representation in RetailATLANTA
The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) has received a $300,000 grant from Macy's and Bloomingdale's division of Federated Department Stores to establish a national program aimed at strengthening UNCF member institutions and increasing minority representation in retail management.
Through this comprehensive initiative, Macy's and Bloomingdale's will help prepare students for retail careers, enhance retail management recruitment and increase student exposure to the industry. In particular, the corporate contribution from Macy's and Bloomingdale's will cover costs associated with strengthening campus career placement offices, career fairs, lectures, workshops and mentoring. On a grassroots level, Federated employees will have an opportunity to serve as mentors to students actively pursuing careers in retail management.
The partnership is important given its objective of increasing minority representation at the management level of the retail industry. According to the most recent census, the retail industry employs approximately 4.9 million minorities in the management capacity and approximately 9.9 million minorities work as sales representatives and cashiers. With corporate offices in Cincinnati and New York, Federated is one of the nation's leading department store retailers, with annual sales of more than $15.2 billion.
