The University of Oklahoma has a press conference scheduled for this afternoon to announce that Jeff Capel will be replacing Kelvin Sampson as the men’s basketball head coach. Capel has spent the past four seasons at the helm of Virginia Commonwealth University’s basketball program. He compiled a record of 79-41 while at VCU, a program which experienced very little success before his tenure. Capel led VCU to the 2004 Colonial Athletic Association’s title game and that year’s NCAA Tournament.

The move from the “mid-major” CAA to the big-time Big XII Conference will spell an enormous leap in national exposure for Capel, who is no stranger to the college basketball spotlight. He played collegiately at perennial powerhouse Duke University under head coach Mike Krzyzewski, and was a solid contributor on Duke’s 1994 NCAA national champion squad. Capel and the University of Missouri head coach Mike Anderson are the only two minority head coaches in the Big XII conference.
