The top officials at the University of New Mexico and Central New Mexico Community College say a newly signed collaboration between the schools will be good for students.

UNM President David Schmidly and CNM President Katharine Winograd signed an agreement Tuesday that calls for dual enrollment and gateway programs in which community college students get the same amenities as UNM students dorm living, student discounts and library access.

"You combine two institutions, and students and taxpayers are going to win," Schmidly said.

The agreement also calls for the two schools to share a Rio Rancho campus that would be built and owned by CNM.

Schmidly, who became UNM president in June, called the collaboration "the biggest thing that's happened in my 75 days." Winograd, president of CNM for 42 days, said it's the best way to use the resources of both institutions.

"It provides an education without barriers," she said. "We're not competing but complementing each other by having the best of both worlds."
