Columbia University has been awarded $75,000 from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation for the Kellogg Jobs and Education Empowerment Program which will help more than 400 residents of upper Manhattan receive job training, education and employment through a student-based social service program at Columbia.

Jackson State University has been awarded a $10,000 endowed scholarship for students pursuing a master's in communicative disorders. The gift was awarded by Dr. Juanita Sims Dory and Charles Dory, owners of the Lextron Corp. in Jackson, Miss. In addition, the couple has provided $1,000 for scholarships this fall semester and has committed to increasing the scholarship fund to $20,000 within the next five years.

Morris College, North Carolina Central University, and St. Paul's College have jointly received a $200,000 grant from the General Electric and Telephone Exchange Corp. The grant will purchase and install computer systems at each school.

Norfolk State University has been awarded the following grants: $4.5 million from the National Science Foundation to establish a center for photonic materials research; $100,000 from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation to support funding for the university's Dozoretz National Institute for Minorities in Applied Sciences; $12,000 from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to be used to establish a Newspaper-in-Residence Program as a joint effort between the university's Department of Mass Communications and Journalism and The Richmond Times-Dispatch; and $10,000 from Phillip Morris, U.S.A., to support the School of Business and Entrepreneurship with student scholarships for several of its accounting and finance majors.

St. Mary's College will receive close to $1 million from the Lilly Endowment Inc. for a college preparatory program grant. The Saint Mary's College/Students/Teachers/Parents Science Project (the CoSTEP Project) will be funded by the Endowment for a total of $999,820 over three years beginning in 1999.

Voorhees College has been awarded a $58,000, one-year planning grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as part of the non-profit organization's teaching and technology initiative.
