Announcing the 2023 Arthur Ashe Jr. Male and Female Sports Scholar of the Year
FAIRFAX, Va. — Diverse: Issues In Higher Education magazine is pleased to announce the 2023 Arthur Ashe Jr. Male and Female Sports Scholar of the Year.
2023 Male Winner: Lyle Yost, The Ohio State University, Swimming & Diving

As the name denotes, the annual Arthur Ashe edition is part of the magazine’s over a quarter century legacy of recognizing young, outstanding minority men and women who have distinguished themselves in their academic and athletic pursuits.
Student-athletes named 2023 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5, be at least a sophomore academically, and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
Of the nearly 1,000 scholar athletes nominated, Diverse: Issues In Higher Education has named Yost and Hayes the 2023 Arthur Ashe Jr. Male and Female Sports Scholar of the Year for best exemplifying the standards of scholarship, athleticism, and humanitarianism.
Yost is a senior diver on the Ohio State swimming and diving team. He was recently named national champion in the one-meter springboard, making him the first Buckeye to win an NCAA diving championship since 2016. Yost, a Spanish major, was named to the dean’s list at Ohio State, and he is a three-time College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America Scholar All-American.
Out of the pool, his community service has included creating Buckeye-themed arts and crafts projects with students with disabilities as well as outreach with Dublin City Schools’ PATHS program. He also works as a diving coach for a local youth team (ACES Diving) that practices at Ohio State and other pools in the Columbus area.
Hayes, a junior biology major, is a midfielder/defender for the Miami University (Ohio) soccer team. She has earned First Team All-Mid-American Conference, All-Ohio First Team, and United Soccer Coaches NCAA All-Midwest recognition.
Community service is a big part of Hayes’ life off the pitch. She has volunteered since high school with Feed the Hungry, an organization that prepares and distributes food to marginalized populations. Among her academic honors, she has been All-Ohio Academic First Team and made the Miami President's List (top grades in the major) for the past five semesters.
Both athletes balance community service and the rigors of top-tier NCAA intercollegiate play with academic achievement at the highest level — they will be profiled in the April 27, 2023, edition of Diverse.
