Cultural Competence Reduces Health Disparities

Newswise — Providing Culturally Competent Care for African Americans and reducing health disparities is an important initiative to improve outcomes for patients from diverse backgrounds.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the projected estimate of total African Americans in 2015 was 46.3 million, a 1.3 percent increase from 2014.(1) A report released from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted a reduction in mortality rates among African Americans aged 65 and older.(2) Younger African Americans are living with or dying of chronic diseases that are typically diagnosed in older Caucasians.(2) It is important for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) to continue providing culturally competent care to reduce the persistent health disparities that affect diverse populations.
