Despite Efforts to Boost Their Numbers, Blacks Account For Just 6% of Doctors in SC

Kelsey Williams is one of 103 students in the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville’s Class of 2020.

But she’s one of just five who is Black.

Nationally, African Americans make up 13.4 percent of the population, according to the U.S. Census. In South Carolina, they are 27.3 percent.

Yet they only make up about 6 percent of the physicians.
