Grants and Gifts

Brigham Young University (Utah) has received a $320,000 grant from The Micron Technology Foundation for microelectronics research and undergraduate training.

California State University, Northridge has been awarded $80,000 from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The funds will be used to sponsor senior student film projects, purchase hardware and software upgrades and help underwrite the university’s annual senior film showcase.

Columbia University (N.Y.) has received a $2 million grant from the Spencer Foundation to create the Spencer Fellowship for Education Reporting in Columbia’s journalism graduate school. The fellowship is open to professional educators, working journalists and candidates with a passion for education writing.

The Johns Hopkins University (Md.) has received an award of more than $100 million, which will be spread over five years, to initiate the Johns Hopkins Institute for Clinical and Translational Research. This institute will facilitate the process of getting research from the lab to the clinic and, lastly, to the community.

The New England Conservatory (Mass.) has been awarded $357,000 by the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund to replace the HVAC system in NEC’s historic Jordan Hall.

Norfolk State University (Va.) has been awarded a $50,000 endowment from the Beazley Foundation Inc. to establish the Beazley Foundation Scholarship Fund. The scholarships will be awarded to students in the NSU Dozoretz
National Institute for Mathematics and Science program.

The University of California, Los Angeles has received $20 million from billionaire Eli Broad for stem cell research. The donation will be used to purchase lab equipment, provide research grants and endow professorships.

The University of Missouri, Kansas City has been given $2.5 million from the Muriel McBrien Kauffmann Foundation to expand the university’s Conservatory of Music and Dance. The funding will be used primarily to address a space crunch.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas has received the largest corporate gift in the institution’s history, $30 million, from Harrah’s Entertainment, a casino giant. About $25 million of the funds will be used to pay for half of the cost of a building that will include the INNovation Village facility, while $5 million will be used for research, recruitment, training and education.

The University of Washington received a $50 million donation from The Foster Foundation and will rename its business school the Michael G. Foster School of Business in honor of the donor.

Yale University’s (Conn.) medical school has been awarded a grant renewal of $7 million from the National Institutes of Health to continue research on alcoholism. Specifically, the research will focus applying new discoveries in a clinic for individuals that are at-risk for alcoholism and for patients that already suffer from the disease.
