Nevada Board of Regents Considers Task Force To Increase Diversity

The Cultural Diversity and Security Committee of the Nevada Board of Regents is considering forming a diversity task force to promote diversity among college staff, faculty and students at the state’s public higher education institutions, according to a Reno Gazette-Journal article.

Las Vegas Regent Cedric Crear said he was asked by diversity leaders from various colleges and universities in Southern Nevada to propose the task force at the board’s next meetings on April 3 and 4 in Carson City.

Crear, a member of the diversity committee, said he agrees that a diversity task force is needed. “I think it’s needed and it will allow the (higher education) system to look deeper at multicultural issues at all the institutions,” he said.

Due to a recent increase in racial incidents and acts of violence on college campuses around the nation, the diversity committee also plans to discuss hate crimes. “In light of all the incidents that have happened nationally, it is a good time to discuss it,” Crear said.
