TALLAHASSEE Fla. — Florida A&M University officials are promising to stabilize and turn around the college in the next year and a half.
Top FAMU officials made the promise during a Wednesday meeting of the Florida board that oversees the entire state university system.
The Board of Governors is requiring FAMU to file regular updates on how it is improving practices following a blistering inspector general’s report. That report criticized officials for failing to follow regulations in the years leading to the hazing death of a drum major.
FAMU made sweeping changes after the November 2011 death of Robert Champion.
In December, the university was placed on probation for a year by a regional accrediting organization. The university has one year to prove it is turning itself around or risk losing its accreditation.
