BLOOMINGTON Ind. – Indiana University hopes to reach unlimited numbers of students worldwide through an aggressive new online education model.
IU plans to spend $8 million as it shifts from its School of Continuing Studies to massive open online courses, or MOOCs, that will offer educational badges to students who complete the courses and master certain skills but don’t enroll in degree programs.
IU President Michael McRobbie says the new program recognizes that the lines between traditional and non-traditional students is blurring.
The Indianapolis Business Journal reports ( https://bit.ly/ROxqND) that the educational badges could help boost revenue within the higher-education sector. Nearly two dozen universities offer MOOCs, including Duke, Princeton and Stanford.
