Hampton President To Take a Year’s Sabbatical

HAMPTON, Va.

Hampton University President William R. Harvey is taking a sabbatical after 25 years in office to work on a book, school officials said.

Harvey could begin his time off next July, said Provost JoAnn Haysbert, who will lead the private university during his absence. Harvey is taking up to a year off to write a book based on a 10-point guide he created to becoming a successful president, Haysbert told the Daily Press of Newport News.

The announcement was made during a faculty meeting last month attended by more than 200 professors and other staff.

“I was surprised,” says Bradford C. Grant, chairman of the department of architecture for the past six years. “I suspect most of the faculty was. Since I’ve been here, this is the first time he takes an extended leave. I think it will be great for him and the university.”
