Elizabeth City State Looking at More Layoffs

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. ― The president of Elizabeth City State University is recommending the school eliminate up to 65 positions to help stabilize its finances.

The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reports that interim Chancellor Charles Becton sent a letter telling trustees eliminating the jobs would save $3.7 million a year.

Up to 30 layoffs would come from faculty members. Four deans would also lose their jobs.

Becton says he is also looking at other cost-saving, such as having private companies run the campus bookstore and provide security for university buildings.

Becton told trustees he will share his entire plan for restructuring the school at a meeting later this month.

Elizabeth City State University let 46 employees go last fall.
