The Southern University System Board of Supervisors selected Flandus McClinton Jr. to serve as acting chancellor for Southern University Baton Rouge. McClinton, who also will continue in his role as the university’s vice chancellor for finance and administration, takes over for James Llorens, whose contract expired Monday.
Two previous attempts to extend Llorens’ contract were unsuccessful. The board is in the midst of a search to find a permanent chancellor for the Baton Rouge campus. The Times-Picayune reported that a motion to have system President Ron Mason also take on the interim chancellor job was defeated.
McClinton is a graduate of Southern University (B.S. accounting, 1971) and earned an MBA from Louisiana State University in 1981. He has worked at Southern University for 43 years.
The Baton Rouge campus is the flagship of the five-school Southern University System, the only historically Black university system in the United States.
