DURHAM, N.C. — Johnson O. Akinleye has been elected the new chancellor at N.C. Central University, where he has served as interim chancellor since January.
Akinleye was elected to the position during a special meeting of the UNC Board of Governors on Monday.
He was named acting chancellor in August 2016 when then-chancellor Debra Saunders-White took a medical leave of absence to focus on treatment of her kidney cancer.
White died in November. Two months later, Akinleye was appointed as interim chancellor.
Before coming to N.C. Central, Akinleye was associate vice chancellor for academic programs at UNC Wilmington. He also held top posts Edward Waters College and Bethune-Cookman University in Florida.
Akinleye began his academic career as a faculty member at Bowie State University in Maryland.
