Dr. Joseph Morales Appointed CDO at California State University, Chico

Dr. Joseph Morales will become chief diversity officer (CDO) at California State University, Chico, effective Jan. 17, 2023. In this role, Morales will be part of the president’s cabinet.Dr. Joseph MoralesDr. Joseph Morales

Previously, Morales was a member of the leadership team in the Office of Inclusive Excellence at University of California, Irvine. He also held many roles in California higher ed in general, including as lecturer at UC Irvine, CSU Long Beach, and CSU Fullerton, and visiting assistant professor at UC Irvine.

Additionally, he was a founding faculty member of the Cal State Long Beach/Long Beach Unified School District Ethnic Studies Initiative.

“My personal experience, my trajectory through higher education, and my previous work as a professional shape my daily life, help me to think always from an empathetic point of view and drive me to put equity-minded values and practices at the center of higher education’s mission,” said Morales, a first-generation student.

Morales holds a Ph.D. in ethnic studies from UC Berkeley; an M.A. in ethnic studies from UC Berkeley; an A.M. in divinity from the University of Chicago; and a B.A. in Spanish and religious studies from UC Santa Barbara.
