University of Toledo Receives $3 Million from U.S. Department of Defense

Centennial Mall and the University Hall Clock Tower from the rooftop of HSHS.The United States Department of Defense donated $3 million to the University of Toledo (UT), according to the Blade.

The grant will go towards the Networking Urban Resources with Teachers and University to enrich Early Childhood Science (NURTURES) program, which focuses on improving young children’s education within the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) field.

NURTURES, which has helped more than 5,000 students and 330 teachers, will expand to military bases and schools across the country. The funding will go towards professional development, community outreach and family engagement,” the Blade reported.

“Those kinds of strong findings led us to begin designing the program to try to scale it up outside of northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan,” said Charlene Czerniak, professor emeritus of science education and research at UT. “I believe it is a great fit for military families. They move so often, it is critical to invest in opportunities to engage families and focus on family and community.”
