Vets Blast Service at College

LaGuardia Community College was once one of the best places for a student veteran.

“Not to sound cliché, but it was euphoric,” said Kevin Chimilio, the former president of the student veterans club at the Long Island City campus. “We would hang out there all day, even when classes were over. It was great.”

About 300 people like Chimilio were enrolled at the school, taking advantage of the many programs there — like Veterans Upward Bound, a federally funded initiative that assists former service members looking to enroll in classes again in various areas.
