U.S. Mint Honors Tuskegee Airmen With New Quarter

The United States Mint released the last coin as part of its America the Beautiful Quarters Program, which honors the Tuskegee Airman National Historic Site at Moton Field, Alabama NewsCenter reported.

Since the Mint program’s establishment in 2010, 56 quarters have been created. For its latest installment, a Tuskegee Airman is portrayed on the quarter.

The site honors the Black pilots, instructors, navigators and bombardiers who were trained nearby during World War II. Tuskegee Airmen consisted of over 15,000 staff and around 1,000 pilots, according to Alabama NewsCenter.

“It is fitting that such a significant historic site will complete this successful coin program,” David J. Ryder, director of the Mint, said in statement. “The Mint is proud to honor the men and women who overcame segregation and prejudice to become one of the most highly respected fighter groups of World War II.”
