VMI Board Votes to Remove Stonewall Jackson’s Name from Quote in Barracks

The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) Board of Visitors has voted to remove Stonewall Jackson’s name as the author of a quote mounted in the student barracks and engraved on class rings, Black Enterprise reported.

The board voted to remove Jackson’s name from Memorial Hall and from the front of the old barracks on campus. The board directed a committee to determine potential new names for those spots.

The quote, “You may be whatever you resolve to be” will remain. Jackson’s name under it will be removed.

Although Jackson said the quote often and kept it in a book of quotes, he did not author it.

In December 2020, VMI removed the statue of Jackson on campus.

The campus still has several memorials and tributes to the Confederacy.
