Rep. Mark Takano poised to lead House Committee on Veterans Affairs

Rep. Mark Takano’s experience with veterans started before he reached Capitol Hill.

His great uncles served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a U.S. Army unit of Japanese Americans who fought in World War II. They served even as their loved ones, including Takano’s grandparents and parents, were held in internment camps in the United States.

One of his great uncles was killed in action in Europe five months before the war ended. Another uncle, a Vietnam War veteran, killed himself.
