University Renames Veterans’ Center

emuYPSILANTI, Mich. — Eastern Michigan University plans to name its veterans’ center after an alumnus and Ypsilanti resident who received the nation’s highest military honor.

A ceremony will be held Friday at the school’s Military and Veterans Service Center honoring Lt. Col. Charles Kettles. The Vietnam War helicopter pilot received the Medal of Honor in July from President Barack Obama.

Several other Veterans Day events are planned Friday in southeastern Michigan. They include a ceremony at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly and one at Dearborn’s Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, in which Navy veteran Andy Anderson will be named the city’s Veteran of the Year.

Six Detroit-area World War II veterans who have received France’s Knight of the Legion Honor Medal will be honored at the Shriners center in Southfield.
