North Carolina Central University Only Black College In State to Recruit National Achievement Scholars

DURHAM, N.C.
Information released by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. ranks North Carolina Central University No. 1 among North Carolina historically Black colleges and universities and third in the state in recruiting National Achievement Scholars (NAS).

“The National Achievement Program is very significant because its goal is to recognize the top scholastically-talented students in the nation, provide them with scholarships and encourage them to pursue their studies,” said Gloria Davis, assistant director of public information for the National Merit Scholarship Corp. “The winners of these scholarship awards are among the best students the nation has to offer.”

In North Carolina, no other HBCU has recruited a National Achievement Scholar. Among all universities in the state, NCCU trails Duke (35) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (18). With five NAS in its fall 2004 freshman class, NCCU also ties for third place among historically Black colleges and universities nationwide trailing Howard University (29), Morehouse College (8) and tying with Hampton (5).

“We are excited about the caliber of students we are recruiting,” said Chancellor James H. Ammons. “These students help build our intellectual capital and provide fertile ground for employers and recruiters for graduate and professional programs.”

Recruiting the nation’s best and brightest has not been an easy task, according to Roland Gaines, vice chancellor for student affairs.

“It is the personal touch, getting to know the students and helping them to achieve their educational goals that are key to their enrollment at NCCU,” he said.
