Re-Investing in Educational Opportunity Programs

Re-Investing in Educational Opportunity Programs

“Pre-College Programs Make the Difference for Many Low-Income Students,” www.diverseeducation.com, Feb. 21

The story of Alberto Uscanga, titled “Pre-College Programs Make the Difference for Many Low-Income Students,” illustrates the power and value of college access programs for low-income and first-generation students. I applaud Diverse for tackling a subject that is so closely tied to the future economic success of our country.

Unfortunately, over the past six years the Bush administration has done much damage to the very programs that have helped Alberto and thousands like him. Bush budget proposals twice attempted to eliminate Upward Bound, Talent Search and GEAR UP. When not trying to kill off the programs outright, this administration has attempted to starve them with years of level or reduced funding. Congress must re-invest in proven educational opportunity programs to ensure that every qualified student of limited means has the ability to prepare for, be admitted to and secure financial aid to attend college.
