Rutgers University: Former Student Stabs 3 people, Including Himself

PISCATAWAY, N.J. ― A former student at Rutgers University returned to its business school and stabbed a faculty member, another student and then himself on Friday, officials said.

The university sent out an alert just before 3 p.m. saying there had been a stabbing at the business school and telling people to avoid the area and take shelter. About a half-hour later, it sent another alert saying a suspect was in custody and the area was safe.

The three people were being treated at a hospital, but it was unclear how badly they were hurt.

No charges had been filed by Friday evening, according to the Middlesex County prosecutors’ office and Rutgers’ police department. The names of the three people weren’t released.

Eyewitnesses described pools and trails of blood at the scene.

Ultan Cullen said he was walking into the business school when the first police officer arrived on the scene.

“He was flooring it through and just like going straight to the other side of the road and just runs right out of the car and into the building,” Cullen said. “Just cop car after cop car started showing up.”

Cullen said he soon saw an ambulance pull up and paramedics carry a man out on a stretcher.

“There was a lot of blood,” Cullen said. “He had one of his arms propped up in the air. It was really messy.”
