University of Wisconsin Student Leaders Condemn Response to Noose Costume

MADISON, Wis. ― University of Wisconsin-Madison student leaders are condemning the response to a man who wore an offensive costume to a football game.

The man wore what appeared to be a President Barack Obama mask with a noose around its neck to the Oct. 29 game against Nebraska. Security officers asked him to remove the noose in the first half of the game but a photo taken later shows him wearing the noose again.

University officials have defended security staff’s decision not to throw the man out given freedom of speech concerns.

Associated Students of Madison leaders sent Chancellor Rebecca Blank a letter Friday calling the costume hate speech and demanding university officials apologize to Black students for not upholding values at β€œa time of need.”

A UW spokeswoman had no immediate comment.
