The PhD Project Opens Membership Eligibility to DACA Recipients

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients – Dreamers – can now apply to join The PhD Project, a non-profit working to diversify business schools and the business world.Blane RuschakBlane Ruschak

“We’re thrilled to open PhD Project membership to DACA recipients,” said Blane Ruschak, president of The PhD Project. “We know that for college students there’s tremendous power in having ‘someone who looks like me, someone who’s walked in my shoes’ in front of the college classroom – and so many students are looking for mentors who understand what the DACA experience is like.”

The PhD Project’s annual conference will take place Mar. 24-25, in Chicago, where it will allow prospective doctoral students to explore the benefits of a business PhD and business professorship.

The organization will cover travel, hotel, and conference expenses for those invited, and the nominal $200 registration fee will be waived for full-time students. To be eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens, permanent U.S. residents, or DACA recipients and hold a minimum of an undergraduate degree or be entering their senior year of college by time of conference attendance.

“As a member of the Circle of Compadres of The PhD Project myself, and a passionate advocate for our nation’s Dreamers, I applaud the organization for opening its ranks to DACA recipients and providing them a pathway to rewarding and fulfilling careers in the front of classrooms,” said Dr. Irma Becerra, president at Marymount University. “Dreamer students are highly motivated and eager to face the many obstacles and challenges on the journey to earning advanced degrees, and they make our communities a better place. We should do all we can to support their dreams and educational pursuits.”
