Pennsylvania HBCU Seeks to Expand Research Opportunities for Minority Students
Lincoln, a historically Black university in Pennsylvania, has been awarded a five-year grant from the National Science Foundation to design a mentorship program in scientific research as part of a national effort to expand research opportunities for minority students.

ASTORIA Ore. Clatsop Community College officials are hoping that federal officials will come through with a grant to help stabilize the crumbling facilities on the campus, which have been rated as 100 percent likely to collapse in a major earthquake.

HEA Renewal Approved, With Some Surprising New Policies
Provisions of the Higher Education Act renewal approved by a House committee on Thursday includes year-round Pell Grants allowing students flexibility in enrollment schedules, a requirement that colleges report their reasons for increasing tuition for students and creation of an international education czar at the U.S. Department of Education.

New Mexico Receives $3.5 Million Grant to Enhance Nursing Programs
SANTA FE, N.M The New Mexico Higher Education Department has awarded $3.5 million to support nursing programs at 17 of the state’s public colleges and universities. The grants ranged from $50,000 to $500,000, the department announced.

Veto Casts Cloud Over Education Bill That Would Have Increased Pell Grants, MSI Funding
President Bush on Tuesday vetoed a 2008 education budget bill that many advocates had championed for its proposed increases in student financial aid and college-access programs. Now, the House and Senate need to muster a two-thirds majority to bring into law the bill, which would have increased the maximum Pell Grant and provide more funding for minority-serving institutions.

The need is there. Just a quarter of the women and minority collegiate athletics staff seeking the Big East Professional Development Grant for Women and Ethnic Minorities received funding this year. Now, advocates hope the program, which they say demonstrates a commitment to diversity, can set an example that other Division I conferences will follow.
