Higher Ed Institutions Contribute to Country’s Widening Social Divide, Educators Say
It is difficult to find a college or university that does not have diversifying its student body on the top of its long list of goals and objectives, but one educator at the American Council on Education’s annual meeting said that many higher ed institutions are largely to blame for society’s widening social, racial and economic divide as many colleges’ own admissions policies keep out the very the populations they say they’re trying to admit.

Appreciation: The Honorable Augustus F. “Gus” Hawkins, 1907-2007
As a freshman legislator, Congressman Hawkins played a major role in writing Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed discrimination in employment, based on race, color, national origin and religion, and established the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. He went on to author or co-author several civil rights and education bills, including the Historically Black College and University Act of 1986.

Veto Casts Cloud Over Education Bill That Would Have Increased Pell Grants, MSI Funding
President Bush on Tuesday vetoed a 2008 education budget bill that many advocates had championed for its proposed increases in student financial aid and college-access programs. Now, the House and Senate need to muster a two-thirds majority to bring into law the bill, which would have increased the maximum Pell Grant and provide more funding for minority-serving institutions.
