Brown became the sixth — and first female and first African-American — president of the Fashion Institute of Technology, a specialized college of art and design, business and technology of the State University of New York in 1998. She has held senior administrative posts at the City University of New York, including acting president and vice chancellor of Bernard Baruch College. She was a New York City deputy mayor for public and community affairs during the David Dinkins administration.
