LOS ANGELES — A former Pomona College professor is suing the school, claiming she was refused tenure and fired because she’s Hispanic and a woman.
Alma Martinez filed suit on Tuesday in Los Angeles.
The former assistant professor of theater claims she was denied promotion to the tenured post of associate professor in January and dismissed. Her last day was June 30.
The suit says the theater department had recommended her promotion and Martinez met the tenure requirements.
She wants to be rehired with tenure and seeks unspecified damages.
Pomona College says it can’t comment on the suit, but it has a diverse faculty and its tenure review process is designed to be exhaustive and fair.
