Protesters Take on Racial Profiling at Providence College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — More than 100 Providence College students, supporters and faculty and staff members rallied against racial profiling they say is widespread among security guards at the private Catholic school.

The Providence Journal reports the Monday protest also criticized the college’s use of hotels owned by the Procaccianti Group. Organizers say the hotel group pays and treats its workers poorly and forces them to endure unsafe working conditions.

The protesters requested the college boycott all Procaccianti Group hotels, fire John Leyden, director of safety and security since October 2003, and begin fully enforcing its non-biased policing policy. They also want the school to discipline the security officer who allegedly profiled professor Julia Jordan-Zachery, director of the college’s Black studies program.

The Rev. Brian Shanley, college president, didn’t comment.
