Tennis superstar Venus Williams, currently focusing on her game this week at the U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows, New York, recently added another achievement to her resume: a Bachelor of Science degree.
Williams, 35, received a B.S. in business administration last month from Indiana University East. The university has teamed with the Women’s Tennis Association and the Women’s Tennis Benefits Association to provide online degree completion programs to athletes on the WTA and the men’s Association of Tennis Professionals circuits.
“It was always my dream to have a business degree, and I ended up going to art school so many times, but in the back of my head I felt like I needed the tools to be a better leader, to be a better planner, to be better at all of the things I wanted to do in my businesses because I’m so hands-on,” Williams said in a press release.
Williams earned an associate degree in 2007 from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. She also manages a clothing line, EleVen; serves as the chief executive officer of an interior design firm, V Starr; and is a Miami Dolphins investor.
The owner of 22 overall Grand Slam titles, including seven in singles, Williams began the online program at IU East in 2011.
“It was just a wonderful experience,” Williams said. “I love being a Red Wolf. I love this school, and I’m so happy to be a part of it.”
