Southern University has fired Dr. Brandon K. Dumas, the school’s vice chancellor for student affairs who was placed on administrative leave last month for undisclosed reasons. Dumas will have the opportunity to appeal his termination to the historically Black institution’s board of supervisors Friday.
Dumas, who had served in his position for nearly five years, will continue to be on administrative leave until his termination becomes effective on Aug.10, according to a release issued by the university. The university declined further comment, citing the pending appeal.
Last month was particularly turbulent for Southern.
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, the accrediting agency that oversees the university, placed it on “warning” status for issues regarding faculty policy, student achievement and student complaints.
On June 20, the university said it had been “made aware” of and was investigating the existence of a private sex video that allegedly featured a member of its staff and was posted on the internet reportedly without the owner’s consent.
On June 19, university registrar Caronda Bean abruptly was “reassigned” and the university declined to comment on the action, calling it a “personnel matter.”
