The City College of New York/CUNY has received a $2.7 million grant from the National Science Foundation to boost research in the realm of nanotechnology hybrid molecular/solid systems. Nanotechnology involves building things one atom or molecule at a time with programmed nanoscopic robot arms. A nanometer is three or four atoms wide.
Claremont Graduate University has been awarded a $325,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to support the university’s Institute of Democratic Renewal in efforts to establish training centers in four to six cities across the nation and to produce a handbook titled How to Build Healthy, Effective Interracial/Multicultural Communities.
Florida Memorial College has been given a $10,000 grant from the Miami-Dade County Public Schools for the institution’s Black Male College Explorers Program and its minority-female oriented Heads-Up Program.
Florida State University received a $100,200 grant from the Jessie Ball duPont Fund to conduct an analysis of Florida’s school voucher program.
Morehouse College has received a $50,000 planning grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration for the renovation design of Merrill Hall, which will house an interdisciplinary telecommunications program.
St. John’s University has received a $50,000 gift from the Hon. Thomas T. Trunkes, a former administrative law judge for the National Labor Relations Board in New York, to establish the William A. Trunkes Memorial Scholarship Fund. William Trunkes was a police officer from 1931 to 1951. He died in 1998. The money will be used to provide annual partial scholarships for New York City police officers or the children of present or former officers taking courses toward degrees in criminal justice.
The College Fund/UNCF has received a $3.3 million grant from the Ford Motor Company to create the Ford-UNCF Corporate Scholars Program. The initiative will support 70 students for three years with scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $15,000. The program will target distinguished juniors, seniors and graduate students in the fields of engineering and business. It will also provide internships and mentoring opportunities for minority students.
