Florida Southern College in Lakeland has been awarded $65,300 from the trustees of the Jessie Ball duPont Fund. The money will establish a faculty-student summer research program.

Jacksonville University in Florida received a $150,000 grant from the trustees of the Jessie Ball duPont Fund. The grant will support development of the school’s Learning Resources Network, which is designed to improve student retention.

Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, both in Nashville, Tenn., received a $5.7 million grant to help fund an ongoing study to explain why Blacks die of cancer at disproportionately high rates.

North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro received a $75,000 grant from General Electric to focus on the retention and enhancement of engineering students in their first two years of study.

Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Ark., received a $264,000 grant from the Teagle Foundation. The grant will be used to promote academic excellence and increase diversity.

South Carolina State University in Orangeburg received $1.3 million from the U.S. Department of Education to fund the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), which has been designed to help more students meet state performance standards, complete college prep classes and develop rigorous curriculum for middle-school students.

The Tribal Connection Project, sponsored by the University of Washington and the National Library of Medicine, received $393,435 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to increase access to electronic health-information resources for Southwest Indian tribes.
The University of California-Los Angeles received a $100,000 donation from Universal Pictures. The grant will be used to provide scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing studies in environmental and social justice issues.

The University of Georgia received a $160,000 two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education to strengthen its multi-disciplinary focus in undergraduate African studies.
