Professional Appointments
Christolyne Buie has been appointed director of the new Granville T. Woods Scholars Program at Baltimore City Community College. Buie comes to BCCC after 33 years in the Baltimore City Public School System where she was a principal, assistant superintendent, area executive officer and chief of staff. Buie earned a bachelor’s and a master’s from Morgan State University in Baltimore.
Dr. Cynthia Flynn Capers has been appointed dean of the University of Akron College of Nursing. She has served at the university since 1997. Most recently, she helped establish the college’s Center for Gerontological Health Nursing and Advocacy. Capers earned a bachelor’s from the University of Maryland and master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Joseph F. Jordan has been named director of the Sonja Haynes Stone Black Cultural Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Jordan earned a bachelor’s from Norfolk State University; a master’s from Ohio State University; and a doctorate from Howard University.
Dr. Henry Lewis III has been named interim president by the Florida A&M University board of trustees. Lewis was a professor in and dean of the FAMU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Lewis earned a bachelor’s in pharmacy from FAMU and a doctor of pharmacy degree from Mercer University in Atlanta.
Dr. Jackie Thomas has been named interim president at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Most recently, he was executive vice president and professor of English at Eastern Shore. Thomas earned a bachelor’s in English from Alabama A&M University; a master’s in English education from Virginia State University; and a doctorate in literature and criticism from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Dorothy Spurlock has been named director of sponsored programs in the office of research at the University of Toledo in Ohio. Prior to this appointment, she was the associate director of the office of research development for Eastern Michigan University. Spurlock earned a bachelor’s in public administration and a master’s in communication from Western Michigan University.
