California State University-Northridge received a state-of-the-art parts manufacturing system from Chatsworth-based Fadal Center Machining, Inc. valued at $106,000 for the manufacturing systems engineering and management department. The department intends to incorporate the machine into the curriculum of several courses, including senior design capstone course, manufacturing systems engineering senior design, fundamentals of computer-aided manufacturing, and advanced computer-aided design and manufacturing.

Columbia College Chicago’s Office of Community Arts Partnerships (OCAP) has received grants totaling $2.5 million to ensure that students and teaching artists will continue to have the opportunity to take their education outside the traditional classroom and into Chicago’s communities. First-time funding from the U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education ($509,500) joins continued support from Polk Bros. Foundation ($110,000), Bank One ($750,000, Saturday Scholars Program) and the Campaign for Community Schools ($220,000 from Bank One). A prestigious Learn & Serve America Higher Education grant for $125,000 will support actions to link academic departments and student support organizations with community organizations. OCAP also has received support from the Rockefeller PACT for $150,000 and Nathan Cummings Foundations for $100,000.
Georgia State University received a four-year, $1.1 million federal grant to support doctoral students pursuing degrees in special education. The grant from the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation of the U.S. Department of Education will support the university’s new PULSE Project (Preparing Urban Leaders in Special Education).

Mt. San Antonio College (Calif.) has been awarded a four-year $880,000 federal TRIO grant to provide an Upward Bound Program that will offer instruction and support services for at risk high-school students in the Pomona Unified and Hacienda Unified School districts.
