SANTA CRUZ Calif.
Several people have been arrested at the University of California, Santa Cruz campus after two anti-growth protests merged at the site of a proposed parking lot.
Jim Burns, a UCSC spokesman, says the problems began before dawn Wednesday when a handful of protesters gathered at a clutch of redwoods at the site. One person was arrested at that time, but the others scurried up the redwoods.
Later, another group of protesters opposed to campus expansion plans marched to the site and had a confrontation with campus security officers.
Several of those protesters were also arrested, but Burns did not have immediate details on any potential charges or citations.
It’s unclear how many of those involved are students.
