Temple University officials were surprised when they received two anonymous donations totaling $5 million in nondescript envelopes sent via U.S. mail. One envelope contained a $1 million check to be used as the university sees fit, and the other had a $4 million check to endowa scholarship fund forwomen andminorities.
The funds were from a bank in Arizona, and the envelopes were addressed to a staffer in the development office. Stuart Sullivan, Temple’s senior vice president for institutional advancement, notes that the staffer was stunned when she received the donations.
“She had never seen checks of that size in her lifetime,” says Sullivan. “It was quite a thrill for her.”
