40 Years of Dance

On the brink of extinction a few years ago, the Dance Theatre of Harlem will launch a tour this January to celebrate its 40th anniversary. The Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble’s 12-week, nine-state “Dancing for America Tour” plans stops at North Carolina A&T State University, Elizabeth City State University and Mississippi State University, among other venues.

Observes Dennis Sankovich, executive director of the Mississippi State University (MSU) Riley Center: “Appreciation of the arts is based on familiarity with the arts, and those who appreciate the arts are more broadly educated citizens. It’s very important for dance to be part of the educational spectrum at MSU. Having Dance Theatre of Harlem at the Riley Center is a wonderful thing for us.”
