WASHINGTON — The Kavli Foundation and three universities are committing $100 million for neuroscience research and plan to launch three institutes to bring together researchers from different disciplines to investigate the workings of the brain.
The California-based foundation announced Thursday that it’s partnering with Johns Hopkins University, Rockefeller University and the University of California, San Francisco to launch the institutes next year.
The foundation says the funding is part of the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies Initiative the president announced in 2013.
Each institute will receive a $20 million endowment supported equally by their universities and the foundation, along with startup funding. They’ll be part of an international network of seven institutes focused on neuroscience and a wider network of 20 focused on astrophysics, nanoscience, neuroscience and theoretical physics.
