Interim chancellor named at LSU-Alexandria

BATON ROUGE La.
Dr. H. Rouse Caffey, chancellor emeritus of the Louisiana State
University AgCenter, has been appointed interim chancellor of LSU at Alexandria,
officials said Thursday.

Caffey, 78, will replace Dr. Robert Cavanaugh, who is
retiring. He will assume his duties on Aug. 17 and serve until a new chancellor
takes over, said LSU System President William L. Jenkins.

“He is a capable and competent administrator with a
wealth of experience who also knows central Louisiana
as well as LSU-A’s current and future needs,” Jenkins said in announcing
the selection.

Prior to serving as chancellor of the AgCenter for 13 years,
Jenkins held the chancellor’s post at LSU in Alexandria
from 1981 to 1984. He retired as AgCenter chancellor in 1997.

“It’s good to be back in the LSU System,” Caffey
said, “to help provide quality education to our people in central Louisiana
who might otherwise not get the opportunity to get a college degree.”

A 21-member search committee is conducting a national search
to recommend the next chancellor for the nearly 50-year-old school, which
serves 2,700 students who live mostly in a 10-parish area around Alexandria.
The LSU Board of Supervisors will make the final choice.
