Benedict College building evacuated; 5 sent to hospitals

COLUMBIA S.C.

Emergency officials in Columbia say a classroom building at Benedict College has been evacuated after five people complained of breathing problems and were sent area hospitals.

Columbia Deputy Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins says the injuries are not serious.

Jenkins says some science classes are held in the building.

He says officials aren’t sure what could have caused the breathing problems.

Jenkins says officials are waiting to find out what chemicals are stored there before going inside.

School officials did not immediately return a telephone message.
