Democratic Lawmakers Break With Iowa Governor Over Community College Funding

DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Democrats are breaking with Governor Culver over funding for community colleges.

Culver, a Democrat, is calling for a 2 percent increase in spending for community colleges, which is significantly smaller than for other parts of the education budget.

The criticism started immediately from Republicans after Culver outlined his budget on Tuesday. Democrats, who control both the House and Senate, weighed in today.

Senate President Jack Kibbie of Emmetsburg says Culver’s recommendation is disappointing, and Democrats will do better.

House Speaker Pat Murphy of Dubuque says there will be some disagreements with the governor “from time to time,” and they’ll focus on putting more resources into community colleges.

Culver has defended his recommendation, saying the schools have access to programs like a $23 million job training effort that’s largely conducted by the 15 community colleges.
