Newspaper: Lawmakers take college jobs

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Florida House Speaker Ray Sansom has drawn criticism for taking a six-figure job at a state college after steering funding its way, but a newspaper investigation has found other current and former lawmakers doing the same.

A review by The Miami Herald and St. Petersburg Times found 18 current and former legislators employed throughout the Florida higher education system. A few were educators before joining the Legislature while others joined academia after being elected.

Sansom, R-Destin, was criticized for taking a job at Northwest Florida State College, the same school he’d secured $35 million in funding for in the past two years. Lawmakers and colleges deny any conflict of interest.
